Big Business on Edge
Brad Johnson
The California Business Properties Association, a lobbying group bankrolled by large corporations like Target, The Home Depot, and Wal Mart, says that Prop 13 reform is “unfair.”
It is unfair that California homeowners are forced to shoulder the lion’s share of the tax burden, as corporations get away with contributing less and less. It is unfair that Disneyland only pays about a nickel per square foot, while the median California homeowner pays over twenty times that much. It is unfair that JP Morgan can buy new property without reassessment, while the average Californian expects a reassessment after every purchase.
Corporate lobbyists like those at CBPA will do whatever it takes to hold onto their loopholes. Take action and show special interests that people, not corporations, will decide what “fair” means.
